The law is to hold a minute’s silence for the Ugandan judge who died in office

Kabugo

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | All clubs in the Star Times Uganda Premier League have been asked to observe a moment of silence over matches in tribute to referee Peter Kabugo.

The UPL Secretariat announced that the minute of silence will be held at the start of every match, starting with the National Enterprises Corporation (NEC) FC vs Uganda Police FC match. This gesture allows players, officials and fans to honor Kabugo.

“Uganda Premier League was deeply saddened by the passing of Peter Kabugo who was the second assistant referee during the SC Villa Vs UPDF FC match played on Friday 1 November 2024,” UPL’s statement read.

“Consequently, SUPL will observe a minute’s silence to commence on the referee’s whistle at all matches on Day 8 in memory of the late Peter Kabugo,” another part of the statement read

Kabugo collapsed on the pitch during a Premier League match between SC Villa and UPDF at the Wankulukuku Stadium, where he was serving as second assistant referee. The incident occurred in the 73rd minute, moments after SC Villa’s Charles Lwanga scored the team’s fifth goal.

But when the players returned to the pitch after celebrating, fans noticed Kabugo lying motionless on the far side of the pitch. Spectators quickly signaled for help, prompting players and officials to rush to his aid.

The match was briefly interrupted as Kabugo was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. In his absence, fourth official Joshua Duula stepped in, allowing play to resume.

Kabugo died before reaching Bismillah Hospital in Kitebi where he was rushed to receive medical attention. He was buried on Sunday.
