What is it like to be inside the polling station when Donald Trump cast your vote? Former PR manager Carey O’Donnell was in the room where it happened on Tuesday morning.

O’Donnell, now an author and consultant, said she had no prior information that the Republican presidential nominee and former First Lady Melania Trump would vote at the same time as her. But she said there was a spoiler alert when she walked into the polling place at the Morton and Barbara Mandel Recreation Center in Palm Beach.

“A Secret Service agent asked if he could look through my wallet,” recalls O’Donnell, who then watched as the agent ran through every inch of the wallet.

Trump’s then entered the polling place at 340 Seaview Ave. with County Director of Elections Wendy Link. They received their ballots and stepped into booths to mark their votes.

O’Donnell said she was within earshot of Trump, and the former president sounded hoarse and spoke in “sotto voce.” The previous day’s four rallies, including one in Michigan that ended well after midnight, took a toll on his voice, Trump later told the press.

O’Donnell said Trump bent over his ballot as he intensely bubbled in answers. O’Donnell said she was struck by his stance, until she also found herself bent over her ballot because the font size was small and the process felt awkward, she said.

Melania looked at him from time to time, “almost like she was asking who she was going to vote for,” O’Donnell joked.

There were about a handful of other voters in the room.

“It was a lot less than what would normally be there,” said O’Donnell, who also usually votes in that precinct.

Afterward, O’Donnell said Trump graciously greeted the investigators.

“He thanked them very respectfully,” she said.

Outside the Mandel Center, the crowd was a mix of Trump supporters and Palm Beachers. A man walking through the crowd was wearing the gold Trump sneakers that were unveiled earlier this year at a sneaker convention in Philadelphia.

That wasn’t the only fashion statement O’Donnell noticed, though. Melania Trump’s six-inch heels and “agnostic” dress also caught her attention.

“She’s someone who knows how to send a message with her attire. But today, let’s say she was agnostic” in what she wore to vote, O’Donnell said.
