As Hayek accepted her award, she reflected on the early days of her career. The actress explained that she was told that it would be difficult to find leading roles because of her Mexican heritage.

“My immediate reaction was, ‘Oh, my God, my heroes are stupid,'” she said. “Who would look at a Mexican? The 50 million Latinos who live in this country, for one thing. It didn’t occur to them.”

Hayek announced she would be accepting the honor on Instagram on Tuesday, saying she “couldn’t be more grateful and honored,” and her fans were quick to congratulate her, writing: “You are truly amazing! Thank you for giving us representation in the media! Muchas felicidades Salma!”
